Even the third position would receive exponentially more clicks than positions six through ten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that\u2019s all starting to change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SERPs are personalized to each individual. They\u2019re also evolving to include a variety of different layouts, placements, sponsored listings, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here\u2019s the real kicker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today you can get more clicks than people ranking above you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All without changing positions necessarily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trick is to focus on increasing your <a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/resources\/glossary\/serp\/\">SERP<\/a> click-through rate instead of swapping rank positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show that organic <a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/resources\/glossary\/click-through-rate\/\">CTR<\/a> data <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can make an impact<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Google\u2019s rankings. Therefore, if you focus on your CTR, first, higher rankings could follow later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s why your ranking isn\u2019t as big of a deal as you might think. And why you should focus your marketing activities instead on raising your Google CTR. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Relationship Between Ranking and CTR<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blindfiveyearold.com\/is-click-through-rate-a-ranking-signal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AJ Kohn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first reported his informal findings on how SERP click-through rate can influence ranking signals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He included a couple of eye-opening quotes to back up his claim, like this one from former Google Engineer Edmond Lau:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It\u2019s pretty clear that any reasonable search engine would use click data on their own results to feed back into ranking to improve the quality of search results. Infrequently clicked results should drop toward the bottom because they\u2019re less relevant, and frequently clicked results bubble toward the top. Building a feedback loop is a fairly obvious step forward in quality for both search and recommendations systems, and a smart search engine would incorporate the data.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More evidence started pouring in from the unlikeliest of places.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/graphics.wsj.com\/google-ftc-report\/img\/ftc-ocr-watermark.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wall Street Journal got access to an FTC document<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that explained the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The (search engine result page) ranking itself is affected by the click data. If we discover that, for a particular query, hypothetically, 80 percent of people click on Result No. 2 and only 10 percent click on Result No. 1, after a while we figure out, well, probably Result 2 is the one people want. So we&#8217;ll switch it.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, this was never the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, images like this have been used forever to explain how CTR changed based on SERP position:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12925\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image5.png 640w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image5-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image5-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/ctr-ranking-factor-227162\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">image source<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CTR you could expect would fall as your position was lower on the page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human behavior at the time meant that people would naturally gravitate towards the higher listings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, all of that is beginning to change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible now to invert those numbers above. You could get a higher CTR even though you ranked lower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That would be like position #3 getting a 30% CTR while the second position only received 20%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So even though you technically \u201crank lower,\u201d you\u2019re getting more traffic and visibility than the guy ranking above you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12921\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1106\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image1.png 1106w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image1-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image1-1024x521.png 1024w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image1-768x391.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1106px) 100vw, 1106px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/higher-organic-click-through-conversion-rates-rankings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">image source<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that\u2019s happening consistently, it will give you another bonus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those excellent results could serve as a sign to Google that those two results should be flip-flopped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rand Fishkin conducted one of the most popular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/rand\/queries-clicks-influence-googles-results\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tests of how SERP CTR can influence Google&#8217;s search results<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wanted to see if click-through rate, alone, could move rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So he asked people to click a specific link to his blog post that was sitting firmly in the seventh position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12922\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"784\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/rand\/queries-clicks-influence-googles-results\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">image source<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short influx of clicks did, in fact, launch his blog post up to the first position in Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12929\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image9.png 670w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image9-232x300.png 232w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/rand\/queries-clicks-influence-googles-results\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">image source<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, these were only temporary changes. The short-term ranking boost eventually fell back down to Earth as clicks died off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inflated CTR wasn\u2019t natural, so results eventually regressed back to the mean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s just like how you can\u2019t increase your <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2014\/01\/29\/hacking-adwords\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AdWords Quality Scores<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> simply by clicking on your own ads a few times. This is the oldest trick in the book, and it just doesn&#8217;t work. (Sorry.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it does show that there is a direct correlation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing your CTR can not only bring you more traffic, but it can also increase how and where you\u2019re showing up in the result pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best news of all is that increasing SERP CTR with marketing activities is almost always easier than doing the hard, time-consuming work of improving your ranking by getting more high-quality links, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how this process works.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to Raise SERP CTR to Skyrocket Traffic<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=The+more+your+pages+beat+the+expected+organic+CTR+for+a+given+position%2C+the+more+likely+you+are+to+appear+in+prominent+organic+positions.&amp;oq=The+more+your+pages+beat+the+expected+organic+CTR+for+a+given+position%2C+the+more+likely+you+are+to+appear+in+prominent+organic+positions.&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j69i64l3.149j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larry Kim\u2019s data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlights two important takeaways about how all of this stuff works:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher than average SERP CTR can eventually lift your position. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While lower than average SERP CTR can also drop your position.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So there\u2019s an upside when you get things right. But a downside when you screw it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t afford to screw it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are three tactics from Larry\u2019s research and our own that will help you find the page click-through rates that are already sabotaging your results. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Start with Your Low Hanging Fruit <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people want to focus on their <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> content or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blog posts. They think that\u2019s what\u2019s driving the most traffic and leads over the past month or so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that couldn\u2019t be further from the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, it\u2019s the old stuff that\u2019s driving most of your results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s good news believe it or not. It\u2019s often easier to go back and update old stuff than to put all of your resources behind cranking out the new.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s see how to find your old \u2018low hanging fruit\u2019 for a quick ROI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, start by making sure you have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\/home?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Search Console<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> setup. Then integrate it with Google Analytics, so they share data back and forth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, head over to the Acquisition section inside Google Analytics, click on the \u201cSearch Console\u201d drop down, and then finally hit \u201cQueries\u201d towards the bottom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12924\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image4.png 250w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image4-240x300.png 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your queries report will tell you most (some) of the search queries people are using to access your site. The reason it doesn\u2019t show all of them is because of Google\u2019s removal of keyword referral data. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are ways to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crazyegg.com\/blog\/unlock-not-provided-keywords\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unlock not provided keywords<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but we don\u2019t have the time or energy to cover that right now as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So back to the Queries report. Here, you will not just see clicks and impressions, but the CTR number we\u2019re after.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for the queries that send you the most traffic, but have the lowest CTR and position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12923\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1140\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image3.png 1140w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image3-300x45.png 300w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image3-1024x154.png 1024w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image3-768x116.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1140px) 100vw, 1140px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can check out the actual SERPs for those keyphrases to determine how competitive each will be. Otherwise, the trick will be to focus on rewriting your title tags and descriptions to not just focus on keyword optimization but driving more clicks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how to do that.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Treat Your Organic Copy like AdWords<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how you used to write title tags to rank well in search engines.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKeyword\u201d or \u201cPost Title\u201d | \u201cBrand Name\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the title tag for this post might read something like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google SERP CTR | Directive Consulting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, that\u2019s super explicit for search engines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s incredibly boring for most users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a page from writing <a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/resources\/glossary\/adwords\/\">AdWords<\/a> copy, instead, to make this more desirable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the average <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/detailed-guide-building-b2b-ppc-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B2B CTR in AdWords is around 2%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s obviously not very impressive. \u00a0Ideally, you want to see CTR\u2019s of at least 8%+ from ads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12928\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"418\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image8.png 418w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image8-300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That tells you that your ads are doing their job. They\u2019re making people interested and grabbing clicks away from your competitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The way you increase AdWords ad CTR is to use copywriting principles while still hitting your keyword.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So instead of just keyword stuffing \u201cSEO Keyword Research Services,\u201d you\u2019d add something a little extra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe that\u2019s a certain specialty you work in. Maybe you use proprietary methods or tools to drive better results. \u00a0Or maybe you will include client case studies to help overcome people\u2019s potential objections to working with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now apply this same strategy to your organic search strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, instead of churning out the same old boring \u201ckeyword optimized\u201d title tag and <a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/resources\/glossary\/meta-description\/\">meta description<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case in point:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12927\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"86\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image7.png 563w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image7-300x46.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also use tricks like a phone number, hyper localization, specific client improvements, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Develop Brand Awareness Before You Need It <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wordstream has found that brand aware people are \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2015\/10\/01\/remarketing-facts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice as likely to click<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d on your ads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal behind this marketing activity is to use inexpensive, consistent, paid social campaigns to help develop brand awareness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook expert Andrea Vahl has pointed to video ads as one of the best ways to cheaply build a custom audience on Facebook. You can get views for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/copyhackers.com\/2016\/06\/advanced-tactics-pro-facebook-marketers-use\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as little as a cent or two each<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means you can start building out custom audiences with thousands of potential customers for less than a hundred bucks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12930\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image6.png 570w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/08\/image6-300x156.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These campaigns are so cheap that you can afford to run them continually, and then retarget them with ongoing content offers as they come out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That way, by the time they do need your product or service and start searching, your name will get their attention first.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rankings used to be the one and only search metric anyone cared about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You did whatever it took to get into the top few results because that\u2019s where the bulk of the visitors went, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those days, thankfully, are going away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, consumers have become more discerning.
