But, of the total search population, Google only captures 64% of the market. Why does this matter? Because if you are only trying to rank on Google than you have forgotten about 34% of your potential market. That is a substantial amount of the pie! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, marketers need to focus their additional <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/blog-seo-modern-marketer-optimize-your-posts-ht\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">search engine optimization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEO) efforts solely on Bing. Since 2010, Yahoo search has been <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2010\/08\/24\/bing-powers-yahoo-search\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">powered by Bing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means that Yahoo is relying on Bing&#8217;s index and ranking algorithm, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you only end up optimizing for one extra search engine rather than two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have compiled the following guide on best practices for B2B Bing Search Marketing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I note the primary influencers for B2B ranking on Bing and Yahoo, and why Bing search cannot be written off. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What You Are Missing if Your Business Does Not Optimize for Bing Search<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur company is only concerned with SEO on Google.\u201d This is a phrase that has been uttered, explicitly or implicitly, by most B2B marketers. The laser-focus on Google does seem a bit narrow-minded, but I can\u2019t blame them. Google undisputedly takes the throne within the search engine kingdom\u2014after all \u201cgoogle\u201d has have even become its own verb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But by optimizing on Bing, you can position your business in front of a THIRD of the search engine market. Why wouldn\u2019t you want to do that?! With over 30% of searchers on Bing and Yahoo, there are a lot of potential clients that your other competitors may be ignoring. You\u2019ve been doing a great job and are on the first or second page of results. But something goes wrong. Maybe Google\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/should-you-optimize-for-yahoo-and-bing-ht\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">algorithm changes and your site gets penalized and knocked off of page one into search engine oblivion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And just like that, any and all search traffic to your website has disintegrated! Your rank on Google is down while you adopt to its new changes, and you\u2019ve potentially missed out on valuable leads. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you had only directed a small amount of your SEO focus on Bing, your website would still have reached over 30% of the market!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where is B2B Bing Search Marketing Particularly Prevalent?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bing\u2019s popularity seems to be discreet. The following technology exposes what makes searchers use Bing and Yahoo:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: These primary desktop browsers use Bing as their <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/opinion\/2016\/05\/02\/internet-bings-how-microsoft-reached-45-uk-searchers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">default search engine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and so does Windows 10 search. Therefore, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bing is also integrated into Windows Phones, Microsoft Surface and Xbox searches.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Virtual Assistants like Siri and Cortana<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A little-known fact is that Siri is powered by Bing. And with Siri<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/siri-comes-to-mac-251713\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now on Mac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even more people will be using Bing to make searches online (without necessarily realizing they are). <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Firefox and AOL:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yahoo has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.link-assistant.com\/news\/bing-seo.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firefox\u2019s default search<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> engine in the United States since 2014, and it is the primary desktop browser for approximately 12% of Americans.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/advertise.bingads.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/post\/january-2016\/bing-powers-aol-search\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bing powers AOL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s web, mobile, and tablet searches. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular sectors, Bing has up to 80% of the search market! Depending on your industry, your company may actually benefit more from Bing search marketing than Google. If your target market is located in a specific part of the U.S., it\u2019s important to know which search engines are popular where. In contrast, Google typically views larger, established companies as more credible results. This information is especially relevant if you are a small businesses with a local client-base. In that case, you will especially want to ensure your website is effectively optimized for Bing search<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ranking on Bing Influencer #1:\u00a0<\/b><b>Indexability<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bing clearly states, &#8220;being indexed is the first step to developing traffic from Bing.&#8221; So, your content\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/blog\/what-are-crawlability-and-indexability-of-a-website\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indexability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/blog\/what-are-crawlability-and-indexability-of-a-website\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crawlability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are critical. First things first, you\u2019ll want to check that all of your website\u2019s important pages are being indexed by Bing. To do this, you can a search for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">site:yoursite.com<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Bing\u2019s search bar. You&#8217;ll immediately see how many of your pages are indexed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12792\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image5.png 550w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image5-300x127.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your website is new, don\u2019t panic if your site is not up there. There are easy steps you can take to solve this problem. The quickest: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\/toolbox\/submit-site-url\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submit your site to Bing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yourself.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You also want Bing to crawl through your site on a frequent basis. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can manage how Bing crawls your content using the Crawl Control feature inside <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/toolbox\/webmaster\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bing Webmaster Tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You\u2019ll probably want to adjust the crawl rate to \u201cfull volume\u201d. The more frequently and thoroughly Bing can crawl through your site, the more of your pages will appear on Bing\u2019s index. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once your site is sufficiently indexable, you may also to familiarize yourself with Bing\u2019s formatting. Bing\u2019s search engine results page (SERP) is formatted through captions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A caption on Bing is made up of three core parts: the title, URL and the snippet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12793\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image6.png 550w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image6-300x62.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bing places a lot of emphasis on the title tag. Bing will often choose titles for search results on its own, instead of taking the title directly from the HTML tag. I pulled two points from Bing&#8217;s own <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bing.com\/webmaster\/2014\/06\/23\/how-does-bing-choose-the-title-for-my-web-page\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure that the title you want is selected:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make the HTML title relevant to the queries that would be used to search your site without being overly long or repetitive. Avoid generic titles like &#8220;Home&#8221; or &#8220;About Us&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t block our crawler. Please refer to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmaster\/help\/crawl-control-55a30302\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crawler control instructions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on how to control the crawler, but keep in mind, you should not block Bingbot if you want your content to be indexed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Ranking on Bing Influencer #2:\u00a0<\/b><b>Content<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content quality is a primary factor in Bing ranking. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bing.com\/search-quality-insights\/2014\/12\/08\/the-role-of-content-quality-in-bing-ranking\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bing discusses content quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are referring to these three aspects of a website or page:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12794\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image7.png 550w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image7-300x72.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By providing clear, deep, easy to find content on your website, Bing is more likely to show your content in search results. Websites that are skimpy on content, showing mostly ads or affiliate links, tend not to rank well. Your content must be easy to navigate and provide the visitor with the information they seek. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting into technical terms, content ranking on Bing follows this function:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12795\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"49\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image8.png 550w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image8-300x27.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical relevance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the query (\u201cDoes it address the query?\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content Quality<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as measured by the three pillars described above), and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Context <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201cIs the query about a recent topic?\u201d, \u201cWhat\u2019s the user\u2019s physical location?\u201d etc\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep this function in mind as you optimize your content for Bing ranking. Additionally, Bing seems to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ignitevisibility.com\/how-is-bing-seo-different-than-google-seo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to reward pictures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, videos, audio and more, due to what is known as \u201centity understanding\u201d. Google, on the other hand, relies much more on text based content. By having a dynamic website that incorporates high quality content with original media, you will help to position your site for higher ranking on both search engines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ranking on Bing Influencer #3:\u00a0<\/b><b>Social Media Signals<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bing doesn&#8217;t shy away from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmaster\/help\/webmaster-guidelines-30fba23a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it uses social signals for rankings. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Social media plays a role in today&#8217;s effort to rank well in search results. The most obvious part it plays is via influence. If you are influential socially, this leads to your followers sharing your information widely, which in turn results in Bing seeing these positive signals. These positive signals can have an impact on how you rank organically in the long run.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12796\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image9.png 550w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image9-300x293.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a user searches on Bing, they can immediately see if a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ignitevisibility.com\/how-is-bing-seo-different-than-google-seo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook friend or Twitter follower <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has recommended or rated the company or product mentioned in the search. They can even find related Pinterest boards when searching for images. Well-positioned results tend to have a higher number of shares, likes, tweets, and +1s. Thus, specific URLs stand out in top results that have a high mass of social signals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google hasn\u2019t yet been able to integrate social media into their search results quite as well as Bing. This is a reason why <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ignitevisibility.com\/category\/social-media-marketing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be a component of your overall marketing and SEO strategy. Generate greater traction for your company on social media platforms, and in turn, your website will rank higher on SERPs. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ranking on Bing Influencer #4:\u00a0<\/b><b>On-Page Optimization<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your ability to optimize the on-page elements of your site will greatly aid your ability to rank. Using relevant and well-written keywords in your headings is critical for Bing, especially in H1 and H2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To do this, we focus on the \u201cVertical.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12797\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image10.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image10.png 500w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/06\/image10-235x300.png 235w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmaster\/help\/webmaster-guidelines-30fba23a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bing\u2019s own thorough outline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for on-page SEO. Following this to a T does not guarantee a high rank, but it certainly will help. At the very least, this is a helpful guideline to to use for an example: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On-Page<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head copy<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titles \u2013 unique, relevant, 65 characters or so long<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Descriptions \u2013 unique, relevant, grammatically correct, roughly 160 or fewer characters<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body Copy<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H1, H2 and other H* tag usage to show content structure on page<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only one &lt;H1&gt;
