That old-school, \u2018siloed\u2019 mentality in today\u2019s world means <a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/why-your-b2b-marketing-plan-stalls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you\u2019re running at half-speed<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s why, and how you can fix it to catch your competition sleeping at the wheel.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How B2B Search Engine Result Pages are Evolving<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEO used to be easy a decade ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Search engine result pages (<a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/resources\/glossary\/serp\/\">SERPs<\/a>) looked largely the same, no matter what you searched for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believe it or not, that made a marketer\u2019s job easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were only so many variables they needed to worry about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could pay to be listed, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowly work your way up the organic positions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that was it! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Competition wasn\u2019t nearly as fierce (or expensive) as it was today and there were only two search marketing methods to worry about (with little overlap between those two as well).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, that\u2019s not the case today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go ahead and search for anything now. It almost doesn\u2019t even matter what you choose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, \u201cpizza\u201d sounds good. Where are the typical search results you\u2019re used to seeing? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, you have ad placements, local placements, and what seemingly looks like the entire history of pizza on the far right in the Knowledge Graph (we\u2019ll come back to this in a second).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This result layout isn\u2019t \u2018static\u2019 though, either. And over the past few years, they\u2019ve gotten incredibly good at understanding the <\/span><b>context<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind what you\u2019re asking for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Google doesn\u2019t just spit back the keywords you typed in. Instead, they\u2019re looking for the underlying <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used when you search.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re trying to understand your goal or objective and give you a comprehensive answer (even if you didn\u2019t explicitly ask for it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRankBrain has become the third-most important signal contributing to the result of a search query\u201d, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-10-26\/google-turning-its-lucrative-web-search-over-to-ai-machines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Greg Corrado of Google<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RankBrain is powered by artificial intelligence &#8212; yes, really &#8212; to learn, at scale, what people <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really want <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when they search for something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019ve been perfecting it, little by little, for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-10-26\/google-turning-its-lucrative-web-search-over-to-ai-machines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half a decade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And it\u2019s the reason Google can quickly shift gears, displaying different results and powering the Knowledge Graph on the right-hand side of a SERP when appropriate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok, fine. But what does this have to do with B2B searches?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a word: Everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B2B searches are no different (as you\u2019ll see in a minute). Your \u201cawesome SEO guy\u201d may, in fact, be awesome. But he\u2019s still missing out on at least 66% of your potential SERP market share.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running at one third your capacity doesn\u2019t cut it today. There are too many competitors, and things evolve too quickly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siloed marketing departments are literally falling behind faster than they\u2019re keeping pace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is good news, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of your competitors are undoubtedly still operating under this decade-old approach. If you can understand how search engines are evolving today and how to align your strategy, you\u2019ll easily grab a head start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that all starts with understanding how the \u2018big three\u2019 facets of search work today.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Paid Results<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paid campaigns are most often used for generating leads. Guess wrong, and you just wasted a bunch of money because you weren\u2019t taking all of this outside context into consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, the big change comes once again in the number of advertising options you get now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product-related searches provide not only the first four positions, but also the entire right-hand side with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/retail\/solutions\/shopping-campaigns\/#?modal_active=none\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shopping Campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12870\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/07\/image4-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1102\" height=\"876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/07\/image4-1.png 1102w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/07\/image4-1-300x238.png 300w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/07\/image4-1-1024x814.png 1024w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/07\/image4-1-768x610.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1102px) 100vw, 1102px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ramifications of this layout are that your organic results don\u2019t even start until the very bottom of the fold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So paid campaigns can (and should) also be used for increasing search visibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the final big PPC benefit is that it helps you figure out which keywords perform best, so you can take that knowledge back to lead your organic campaigns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>2. Organic Rankings<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your best long-term ROI is going to come through organic search.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason is that you spend time on the front-end building up momentum, before the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/building-a-marketing-flywheel-whiteboard-friday\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flywheel kicks in<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and starts producing compounding results. (Where more traffic leads to more visits which lead to more shares, leading back to more traffic and repeating this cycle over and over.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there are a few problems with organic search.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve already seen one of those: Its SERP \u2018footprint\u2019 is diminishing (or at least being deprioritized) in favor of other search verticals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the first step is to be more strategic is how you\u2019re going after new customers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, people will use different types of keywords to find different types of pages. You can split those keywords up by funnel stage to help you figure out if they\u2019re looking for product comparisons or an individual product page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12874\" src=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/07\/image8-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/07\/image8-1.png 618w, https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/07\/image8-1-300x142.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/just-good-ppc-account-structure-anyway-202476\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">image source<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means \u201cSEO\u201d now also needs to loop in content writers and designers to create better pages that better align with each keyword\u2019s intent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last primary issue is the massive amount of time and resources it takes to slowly start showing up for all of your industry\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/keyword-strategy-important-seo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-tail searches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the reasons is because you\u2019re competing head-on against big brands which tend to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/love-it-or-hate-it-theres-no-doubt-that-google-prefers-brands\/59379\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get the benefit of the doubt many times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are a few tricks you can use to outsmart them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One perfect example is leveraging <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/b2b-mobile-marketing-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">featured snippets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to increase your SERP click-through rate. HubSpot found that these featured boxes can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase <a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/resources\/glossary\/click-through-rate\/\">CTR<\/a> by as much as 114%<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how it looks. It receives a huge paragraph blog where content from the page is previewed.
