As <a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/services\/seo\/\">SEOs <\/a>we\u00a0are often\u00a0far more\u00a0focused on setting up our link building strategy then we\u00a0are on optimizing it. Unfortunately, we\u00a0rarely track the efficiency and profitability of our efforts once we (or, our teams)\u00a0have begun.<\/p>\n<h2>What Metrics Does Our Tool Measure?<\/h2>\n<p>Our\u00a0tool takes into account the following metrics and then creates an overall dollar value for each of the links you build:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>URL of <a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/resources\/glossary\/backlinks\/\">Backlink<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Status of Backlink (Live or Awaiting Approval)<\/li>\n<li>Type of Backlink (<a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/services\/seo\/\">Guest Posting<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/services\/content\/\">Content Promoters<\/a>, Giveaways, Commenting, Directories, Topical Blogs, Links Pages, Reviews, Donations, Forums,<a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/heres-how-to-guest-post-for-your-industries-top-blogs\/\"> Professional Organizations<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Time Required<\/li>\n<li>Hourly Rate<\/li>\n<li>Domain Authority (use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/moz.com\/tools\/seo-toolbar\">MozBar<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Domain Authority Multiplier (you determine this per website)<\/li>\n<li>Destination URL<\/li>\n<li>Referral Traffic (generated via Google Analytics)<\/li>\n<li>Conversion Rate\u00a0(generated via Google Analytics)<\/li>\n<li>Average <a href=\"https:\/\/directiveconsulting.com\/uk\/resources\/glossary\/lifetime-value\/\">Lifetime Value<\/a> of Conversion<\/li>\n<li>Overall Value (in Dollars)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For tracking <em>Referral Traffic<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Conversion Rate<\/em>, and <em>Average Lifetime Value of Conversion<\/em>,\u00a0we utilize Google Analytics. If you need help setting this up please see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/1032415?hl=en\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>How Do You Use The Tool?<\/h2>\n<p>First, download the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/etz9vay9xy44ld6\/LinkValueX.xlsx?dl=1\">link building efficiency tool<\/a> here.<\/p>\n<p><em>There are detailed\u00a0instructions\u00a0for each column\u00a0in the comment section of each category header, but I will explain the tool\u00a0in further\u00a0detail below.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Open the Tool in Excel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Upon opening\u00a0the tool in Excel, you will see a table in the top left corner with the following information: &#8220;Company Name&#8221;, &#8220;Average\u00a0Lifetime Value of Conversion&#8221;, and &#8220;Domain Authority Multiplier&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2v4zi8pl64nxt.cloudfront.net\/link-building-efficiency-tool\/54921fc78d64c9.78342166.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You should customize this information to fit your unique situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Insert the Backlink URL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, you will simply insert the URL of the link you are trying to build. In the section titled &#8220;Backlink URL&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. List the Status of the Link<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this column, we utilize a drop down menu which allows you to simply choose whether your link is &#8220;Live&#8221; or &#8220;Awaiting Approval&#8221;. If you choose &#8220;Awaiting Approval&#8221; an &#8220;Overall Value&#8221; will not be calculated; but instead, show &#8220;Sorry Still Waiting&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Categorize your Backlink<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this section, we also utilize of drop down menu. From this menu, you can choose from the following categories: &#8220;Guest Posting&#8221;, &#8220;Content Promoters&#8221;, &#8220;Giveaways&#8221;, &#8220;Commenting&#8221;, &#8220;Directories&#8221;, &#8220;Topical Blogs&#8221;, &#8220;Links Pages&#8221;, &#8220;Reviews&#8221;, &#8220;Donations&#8221;, &#8220;Forums&#8221;, and &#8220;Professional Organizations&#8221;. These categories are derived from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/linkprospector.citationlabs.com\/\">Citation Labs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>*tip: If you would like to change these\u00a0categories,\u00a0you can highlight the cell you want to change,\u00a0click on &#8220;Data&#8221;, click on &#8220;Validation&#8221;, edit, and click &#8220;OK&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2v4zi8pl64nxt.cloudfront.net\/link-building-efficiency-tool\/54921fc809cdc2.66258803.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. How Long Did it Take You?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this metric simply track the time it takes you to build the link. We love using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toggl.com\/\">Toggl<\/a> for this! (<em>unfortunately, no great integration with Google Sheets&#8230;yet<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2v4zi8pl64nxt.cloudfront.net\/link-building-efficiency-tool\/54921fc86a7471.27348914.png\" alt=\"Screen-Shot-2014-12-12-at-3.37.00-PM.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Insert You or Your Teams Hourly Rate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This part is essential for your ROI calculation.<\/p>\n<p><em>*tip: If you have multiple members of your team building links you can track their name and use a Vlookup to calculate their hourly rate.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Insert the Domain Authority of the Page\u00a0You are Trying to EARN a Link From<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here, we simply use the MozBar to quickly gather any metrics we want to track. For the\u00a0sake of simplicity, we only track the DA of the website we are trying to earn the link from.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2v4zi8pl64nxt.cloudfront.net\/link-building-efficiency-tool\/54921fc8d4c363.45278431.png\" alt=\"Screen-Shot-2014-12-12-at-3.29.23-PM.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Domain Authority Value Calculation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You do not need to touch this column. The Domain Authority Value will be calculated by multiplying your Domain\u00a0Authority*Domain Authority Multiplier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Enter the Destination You are Linking Back To\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Destination URL can either be your Homepage or any\u00a0specific product pages, landing pages, etc.<\/p>\n<p><em>*tip: Make sure you are setting up your goal tracking funnel so you can track conversions and any leaks in your funnel. You will also need to have at least one Goal Value set up so you can determine the &#8220;Overall Value&#8221; of your link building efforts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>10.\u00a0Referral\u00a0Traffic Generated<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How much traffic did your link generate. While not all link building efforts serve the purpose of generating traffic, I would argue that the most valuable link building campaigns generate some sort of referral traffic.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2v4zi8pl64nxt.cloudfront.net\/link-building-efficiency-tool\/54921fc9825f69.39387260.png\" alt=\"Screen-Shot-2014-12-12-at-3.31.41-PM.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>11. Conversion Rate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quite simply, how many of the visitors from your link building efforts are converting and what is that rate?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2v4zi8pl64nxt.cloudfront.net\/link-building-efficiency-tool\/54921fca12a802.31594844.png\" alt=\"Screen-Shot-2014-12-12-at-3.33.36-PM.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>12.\u00a0Average\u00a0Lifetime Value of Conversion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You do not touch this column. The value for each\u00a0cell is calculated via the initial table in the top left corner in cell B2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13. Overall Value<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You do not touch this column. The &#8220;Overall Value&#8221; calculation is determined by the following formula:\u00a0=IF(B:B=&#8221;Live&#8221;,(I7*J7*K7)+G7-(D7*E7),&#8221;Sorry Still Waiting&#8221;) which simply means, if the link is live it&#8217;s value is determined by: (Referral\u00a0Traffic Generated\u00a0*\u00a0Conversion Rate\u00a0*\u00a0Average Lifetime Value of Conversion) + Domain Authority Value &#8211; (Time Required\u00a0*\u00a0Hourly Rate).<\/p>\n<h2>Does Your Tool Use a Pivot Table?<\/h2>\n<p>Of course \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>You can set your pivot table up\u00a0however you like, but we have\u00a0attached a screenshot below of\u00a0one of our favorite ways to analyze our link building\u00a0efforts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2v4zi8pl64nxt.cloudfront.net\/link-building-efficiency-tool\/54921fcaa4dbd4.88490177.png\" alt=\"Screen-Shot-2014-12-12-at-10.16.28-AM.pn\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>We hope this tool can be of use for you and that it will at least make us SEO&#8217;s think more critically about the efficiency and profitability of our link building.
