AI Visibility Tools vs. GEO Agencies: What B2B Brands Actually Need in 2027

Stop Confusing AI Visibility Software With GEO Expertise

Here is a hot take, that shouldn’t be a hot take: having Profound or some other kick*ss AI marketing platform doesn’t mean you no longer need an SEO expert calling the shots.

B2B marketing leaders care about 3 things when it comes down to AI search brass tax:

  • Visibility
  • Execution
  • Cost

… and they are are all trying to answer a few key questions:

  1. Can I accurately understand how my brand is showing up in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and other AI search engines?
  2. Once I know where we’re underperforming, who is actually going to fix it?
  3. Will investing in another platform or an agency translate into more qualified traffic, pipeline, and revenue?

However, there’s a pretty significant piece of the puzzle missing from that conversation, which is: who is responsible for deciding what to prioritize? Who is building the strategy? Who is connecting all of this activity back to business outcomes and actual revenue?

Ultimately, if we drive visibility without strategy, those metrics are just data points and execution without prioritization is just activity, neither of which guarantees ROI from your AEO efforts.

TL;DR: These AI visibility and research tools are necessary layers to your tech stack in 2027, but they are not a replacement for an actual SEO / AEO [insert preferred acronym here] Strategist.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Would my internal marketing team say we don’t need a Paid Media channel expert just because we have access to Google Ads data?
    • No. You still need someone to manage those campaigns.
  • Would my Head of Demand Gen say we don’t need an SEO expert involved in our organic strategy if we have a SEMrush login?
    • No. You still need someone to parse through the SEMRush data and actually know how to use the tool.

This is why it will never cease to amaze me when B2B marketing leaders say they’re trying to choose between investing in Profound or hiring an agency.

That’s like asking whether you should buy running shoes or hire a running coach. One gives you the equipment while the other helps you figure out how to actually win the race. If you’re serious about competing, you probably need both.

Evaluating & Comparing the Best AI Tools

Not all AI marketing platforms are built to solve the same problems. Some excel at visibility intelligence, others at automating execution, and a few are trying to do it all.

We’ve evaluated these platforms through the lens of what B2B marketing teams actually need to drive organic growth: visibility, execution, strategic planning, prioritization, reporting, and ROI measurement.

Here’s how they stack up based on our experience using and evaluating them, which swimlanes they can effectively cover for brands and where agencies or consultants can fill in the gaps.

Disclaimer: These ratings reflect the Directive team’s personal opinions and evaluations as of October 2026, rather than an exhaustive assessment of every feature.

1. Profound

Core Capability: One of the most recognized brands when it comes to robust AI visibility intelligence and agent automation for enterprise brands and monitoring brand performance for a specific set of prompts.

Biggest Detractor: The platform can be cost prohibitive (for brands and agencies) and it still requires a strategic individual to parse through the data and insights to determine which findings are high value enough to implement.

TL;DR: The insights are plentiful and automation capabilities are strong, but without oversight, brands could end up implementing recommendations that contradict one another or prioritizing efforts that don’t yield measurable outcomes for the business.

2. Searchable

Core Capability: Blends AI visibility monitoring, competitive insights and opportunity spotting via Prompt Universe, while also offering seamless API capabilities for easy AI visibility reporting externally and natively in platform.

Biggest Detractor: Weaker agentic implementation capabilities and definitely newer in the market in comparison to some incumbent software.

TL;DR: While this platform is newer, what they lack in agent capabilities they make up for in UX, product evolution and ease of use, especially for agencies.

3. Scrunch

Core Capability: Offers agent-recommended web improvements to help brands identify and fill visibility gaps while tracking visibility and illustrating what competitors do well.

Biggest Detractor: UX within Scrunch has become a challenge for many users, and their prompt variation pricing changes have made the tool cost prohibitive for brands that are tracking large prompt universes across many regions and many LLMs.

TL;DR: Scrunch may be better suited to brands with a more focused set of priority prompts, who know what they want to show up for and need help developing a plan to dominate that category, but spotting and identifying gaps will be a big challenge in this platform unless you can afford to track thousands of prompt variations.

4. AirOps

Core Capability: Automates and scales content creation and on-page optimizations or content refresh workflows based on a set of rules and requirements for your brand by identifying low-hanging fruit or recent risk opportunities.

Biggest Detractor: The tool is designed to bulk produce content operations and not fulfill actions based on strategic oversight or editorial inputs. Layering in more human elements into the workflows slows down the automations and, depending on the level of human review required, can end up resulting in little to no time savings.

TL;DR: Base pricing for the platform is appealing for a singular brand, especially without their own Claude skills or proprietary AI workflows built, but automation calls and human intervention steps layered in can rack up a lot of extra dollars and time spent if you’re not careful.

5. Ahrefs

Core Capability: Using Ahref’s Brand Radar you can measure total AISOV for a brand and see how they measure up against a specific set of competitors when it comes to their AI visibility, citation share, total impressions, web visibility, or even performance across specific LLM platforms.

Biggest Detractor: This platform is an intelligence and research platform, you’ll still need a person in seat to develop the strategy and implement the work that comes out of what the data tells us.

TL;DR: Brand Radar is the GOAT when it comes to measuring all prompts, not just a specific set of prompts. It’s also great for seeing total AI Share of Voice and understanding how a brand stacks up against direct and indirect competitors in traditional search and AI results.

6. SEMrush

Core Capability: Offers broad SEO and AI visibility capabilities, and given so many teams already have access to SEMrush, they can use this same platform to gain an understanding of LLM performance.

Biggest Detractor: Again, SEMrush offers broad AI visibility capabilities but, in our evaluation, offered less depth in AI-specific opportunity identification and meaningful agentic implementation.

TL;DR: You’re going to be hard-pressed to excel in AI visibility if you’re just relying on SEMrush for insight and recommendations. This tool alone will not give you what you need to dominate LLM responses.

7. GEO Agency

Core Capability: A strong GEO agency brings together the technology, strategic expertise, and execution capabilities needed to turn AI visibility insights into measurable business outcomes. Beyond identifying where a brand is underperforming, the right partner can determine which opportunities are worth pursuing, prioritize initiatives based on business impact, and connect organic performance to pipeline and revenue.

Biggest Detractor: Agency relationships are a commitment. Any partner worth their salt is going to require a 6-to-12-month engagement, so you need to be ready to invest in a long-term relationship.  Finding the right partner matters just as much as choosing the right platform.

TL;DR: Partnering with a GEO agency to handle all organic strategy, insights, and reporting allows you to save on tech stack costs while knowing that the people who are guiding you are at the top of their game and gaining insights from the peers alongside them. However, the biggest advantage of an agency isn’t access to more tools. It’s having experienced strategists who know which insights matter, what to do about them, and how to measure whether the work is actually moving the business forward.

8. Freelancer or Consultant

Core Capability: Freelancers can be dedicated resources to your business who are scrappy workers who may also have their own tech, tools, and workflows vetted, but of course, much more affordable than working with an agency and their entire ecosystem of support.

Biggest Detractor: These individuals are solo and can take longer to complete deliverables and audits since they can’t divvy up the work. They also may be up to speed on the newest industry insights, or they might not, but they don’t have the benefit of groupthink and agency-backed budgets for technology and testing.

TL;DR: If you don’t want to worry about tech but don’t want to commit to a long-term engagement, or just need some extra hands on deck for a short stint, a consultant could be the way to go.

The Best GEO Tech Stack for 2027

So, what’s the ideal tech stack and strategic support mix for brands to dominate AI visibility? The answer may be different for each brand based on the skills and experience of your own internal teams and the level of expertise and tech stack your agency brings to the table.

If you’ve got an experienced SEO team that knows how to interpret AI visibility data, prioritize opportunities, and execute against them, investing in a platform like Profound, Searchable, or Ahrefs Brand Radar might be exactly what you need.

But if you’re expecting the platform to tell you what matters, build your strategy, execute the work, and prove the ROI, you’re going to be disappointed.

At Directive, we regularly vet tech to make sure we have the best tools on the market for our clients and as of publishing this article, we’re currently using a combination of Ahrefs, SEMrush, and Searchable alongside our proprietary platform, Stratos.

But the technology isn’t what makes the strategy work. It’s the expertise behind it.

Because the goal isn’t to build the most impressive GEO tech stack. It’s to build a program that actually drives revenue.
